Overview
Infectious diseases kill more people worldwide than any other single cause and are among the most common reasons for hospitalization. Infectious diseases is a dynamic field, and new challenges have emerged facing frontline providers. Primary care providers, emergency department providers and hospitalists are often the first to identify and treat infections in patients. Changes in the health care system have prompted the development and implementation of clinical practice guidelines and clinical pathways. These all impact generalist providers, who may have limited time and resources to access expert and up-to-date information in infectious diseases. This course is designed to explore major areas in infectious diseases which are impacting generalists. Our major areas of focus will include: Recent updates in general infectious diseases and HIV medicine. Acute infectious disease syndromes that are encountered by primary care practitioners and hospitalists. This will include reviews of sepsis, fever and rash, Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia, acute pancreatitis, and other infectious disease emergencies. Approach to commonly encountered syndromes such as UTI, Helicobacter pylori infection, latent TB infection and tick-borne illnesses. Review of national guidelines for vaccines, sexually transmitted infections (with new treatment strategies especially for antibiotic resistant gonorrhea), as well as pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV (PrEP).

Objectives
  1. Discuss the clinical manifestations of different syndromes such as tick-borne illnesses, sexually transmitted infections, and urinary tract infections, and the recommended testing and treatment for each.
  2. Formulate a plan for the initial evaluation and management of patients with clinical syndromes such as sepsis, acute pancreatitis, fever and rash, and fever in the returning traveler.
  3. Recognize and manage infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Helicobacter pylori and multidrug-resistant gram negative bacteria .
  4. Apply current guideline recommendations for vaccine administration, HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis and the management of latent tuberculosis infection.

Accreditation
