Overview
A program that includes a broad survey of the medical education literature, careful analysis of selected full texts, and an editorial board meeting to achieve consensus. Each month we conduct a systematic search in PubMed for medical education literature that typically yields around 400 titles and abstracts. We screen all of them in Covidence systematic review software. Based on collective votes from the month’s reviewers, we select 8-12 articles for full text review based on total votes. All reviewers independently rate each full text across 5 categories: broad relevance, readability, originality, rigor, and importance. Ratings are averaged prior to an end of month editorial meeting, where we decide which 3-4 articles are “Must Reads” for those involved with medical education.

Objectives
  1. Differentiate titles and abstracts that represent scholarship that is higher in quality from lower quality publications.
  2. Analyze full text articles against a rubric that reflects their value to the field of medical education.
  3. Justify their appraisal of the quality of a medical education publication as worth of being considered a must read in medical education.
  4. Summarize the key findings of an article selected as a must read and its relevance to diverse stakeholders in medical education.
