Overview

The first Johns Hopkins Proton “Certificate" Course offered in the US. This certificate course is designed for radiation oncologists and medical physicists in-training, both domestic and international, as well as practicing radiation oncologists and medical physicists to obtain a broad understanding of the fundamentals of proton therapy, clinical evidence for proton therapy across disease sites, proton planning principles, and potential future directions of proton research and implementation. Participants in this course will gain an understanding of the clinical indications, drawbacks, treatment planning, biology, physics, and technology of proton therapy, which continue to evolve over time in the context of research advancements. This course is designed to teach radiation oncologists and medical physicists when to utilize and how to effectively deliver proton therapy to optimize care for patients with cancer.

The certificate course will consist of a virtual component of lectures (7 hours) as well as a live component held at the Johns Hopkins Proton Therapy Center (1.5 days) in Washington, D.C. Virtual lectures will include clinical indications, pitfalls, and data pertaining to proton therapy. The live component will include interactive learning sessions, hands-on treatment planning demonstrations, and firsthand interaction with the proton gantry. Live lectures will also include fundamentals of proton physics and biology, proton modalities including pencil beam scanning, planning techniques across disease sites, access to and logistics of proton centers, and frontiers in proton research.

Participants who take the course will receive a Certificate of Completion and will be eligible for continuing medical education credits signifying completion of this comprehensive proton therapy course.
