Overview

The management of schizophrenia entails many challenges. Negative and cognitive symptoms have a considerable impact on patients’ function and quality of life, but the availability of a treatment licensed for these indications remains an unmet need. However, ongoing investigations may lead to the availability of effective treatments. The selection of an oral or LAI antipsychotic requires comprehensive evaluation of several factors, including efficacy, safety, and the nature of the treatment regimen, in order to tailor therapy to the individual patient. Regardless of the therapy chosen, steps must be taken to assure good patient adherence with treatment.

Objectives
  1. Maintain awareness of negative and cognitive symptoms in patients with schizophrenia and stay abreast of emerging data on potential treatments
  2. Weigh the efficacy and safety profiles of current oral and long-acting injectable antipsychotics when choosing agents for individual patients.
  3. Regularly monitor adherence to therapy in patients with schizophrenia and institute measures to reduce the potential for nonadherence.
