Overview
The Johns Hopkins University Clinical Vestibular Competency Course is designed for rehabilitation specialists (physical therapists/occupational therapists) and healthcare providers with a strong interest in vestibular pathology and rehabilitation. This is a hybrid, intensive, course which consists of online lectures available for a three-month duration with an optional two day in-person gathering for additional lecture, lab, and examination to achieve certification if so desired. Three unique educational tracts are available: 1. Competency certification - Virtual lectures and in-person attendance that includes knowledge and skill examination to earn certification from Johns Hopkins University 2. Full attendance - Virtual and in person attendance (Certificate of attendance, no certification testing) 3. Virtual lectures only (Certificate of attendance, no in-person, no certification testing)


Objectives
  1. Identify and explain the anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system.
  2. Explain and interpret the clinical significance of diagnostic studies and laboratory data.
  3. Explain and interpret the clinical significance of the physical assessment, interview data and other information from the medical record.
  4. Explain and identify signs and symptoms of vestibular dysfunction and be able to refer a patient to a different provider when necessary.
  5. Identify therapeutic management for vestibular dysfunction including medications, diet, and surgical procedures.
  6. Identify red-flags related to central dysfunction and explain the appropriate response when identifying signs of central dysfunction.
  7. Formulate a plan of care for individuals with vestibular dysfunction based on medical records, vestibular testing, and physical evaluation.
  8. Demonstrate appropriate interdisciplinary care communication and collaboration.
