Overview

As the older adult population lives longer and becomes increasingly diverse, it is imperative to offer high quality continuing education in the care and management of geriatric patients across the health care spectrum. Health care is faced with an increase in persons with dementia and those with multiple chronic conditions. Many clinicians and healthcare professionals receive very little or no formal geriatrics training, despite this growing trend in the number of older adults they care for. This activity is designed to provide practical information to clinicians and health care providers who care for older adults. It will improve knowledge about diseases and syndromes common in the older adult and offer practical and effective guides to their management. It will address key challenges to health care teams today, including multimorbidity, brain health, mobile technologies, community resources, and pharmacology.

We wish to acknowledge the support of the Johns Hopkins Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP).

2026 Beacham Keynote Lecturer: Susan L. Gearhart, MD

Dr. Gearhart is a colorectal surgeon with over 25 years in practice. She has expertise in treating colonoscopy, colon removal, among other conditions.

NEW for 2026: Saturday, February 28, 1/2-Day DEMENTIA DAY

Based on requests from past participants, we will host topics relating to dementia on Saturday, February 28, 8:00 AM-12:00 PM. Topics are firming up now. Check back often for more details about the Dementia Day.

Objectives
  1. Describe important research developments that influence the clinical care of geriatric patients.
  2. Identify the challenges associated with caring for older adults with multiple chronic conditions and examine evidence based strategies to support their care as they navigate the healthcare system.
  3. Examine common geriatric syndromes and describe evidence based approaches, as well as limitations, in the management of organ system diseases frequently encountered in older adults, including dementia, congestive heart failure, diabetes, and polypharmacy.
  4. Recognize the complexities and challenges of caring for older adults with multiple chronic conditions and evaluate strategies to optimize their management across the continuum of the health system.
