Overview

We wish to acknowledge the support of the Johns Hopkins Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP).

As the older adult population lives longer and becomes increasingly diverse, it is imperative that we offer high quality continuing education in the care and management of geriatric patients across the health care spectrum. Health care is faced with an increase in persons with dementia and those with multiple chronic conditions. Many clinicians and healthcare professionals receive very little or no formal geriatrics training, despite this growing trend in the number of older adults they care for. This activity is designed to provide practical information to clinicians and healthcare professionals who care for older adults. It will improve knowledge about diseases and syndromes common in the older adult and offer practical and effective guides to their management. It will address key challenges to health care teams today, including multimorbidity, brain health, mobile technologies, community resources, and pharmacology.

Objectives
After attending this activity, the learner will demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Identify common geriatric syndromes, and approaches to, and limits of management of specific disease of organ systems that are common in older adults (Dementia, CHF, Diabetes, and Polypharmacy).
  2. Recognize the growing diversity in the older population and awareness of health inequities when providing care to meet their individual needs.
  3. Describe the path from diagnosis to management of a person with dementia and the role of the health care team.
  4. Describe important research developments that influence the clinical care of geriatric patients.
