Overview
Interdisciplinary collaboration and coordination is vital to facilitate early mobility and rehabilitation in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting. A multi-disciplinary stakeholder meeting aimed at improving long-term outcomes for ICU survivors identified important ‘silos’ among critical care and rehabilitation clinicians working in the ICU, with these ‘silos’ acting as a barrier to collaboratively advancing the field and improving patient outcomes. Implementing ICU rehabilitation requires creation of an ICU culture based on proactive rehabilitation and interdisciplinary collaboration between all critical care and rehabilitation clinicians.

ACCME Objectives
  1. Appraise the evidence supporting early rehabilitation and mobility in critically ill adults, including issues unique to Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) and related life support interventions.
  2. Describe ICU-specific rehabilitation strategies and interventions for adult critically ill patients.
  3. Appraise current evidence, clinical practice, and interdisciplinary roles of nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech language pathology, and respiratory therapy in an adult ICU rehabilitation program
  4. Explain communication and swallowing strategies for adult ICU patients.
  5. Describe the management of sedation and delirium for adult ICU patients.
  6. Describe strategies to engage critically ill patients and their families for activity and mobility, including cognitive, communication, and psychology-based strategies.
  7. Describe the impact and challenges of ICU survivorship on patients and their families, including healthcare delivery in post-ICU settings.
