Overview
There is a high burden of hepatitis C (HCV) in Baltimore City and Baltimore County, Maryland, due to high rates of intravenous drug use (IDU). With the emergence of direct acting antivirals that have the potential to cure the vast majority of HCV, we have the ability to greatly decrease HCV morbidity/mortality. However, the majority remain untreated. There are several barriers affecting the hepatitis C care cascade, a primary issue is that there are not enough providers trained to treat HCV. Thus, the CDC has identified the need to increase the role of primary care providers in HCV treatment.

Objectives
  1. Summarize the CDC screening recommendations and rationale for chronic Hepatitis C infection: birth cohort, IDU, and HIV+ MSM.
  2. Identify and interpret key laboratory tests relevant to recently diagnosed patients.
  3. Describe the natural history of HCV and discuss factors that influence the rate of progression of fibrosis.
  4. Identify the presence of cirrhosis with standard laboratory tests and physical examination findings.
  5. Describe the goals of HCV treatment and define virological response.
  6. Recognize the different HCV therapeutic options and duration based on HCV genotype, stage of fibrosis/cirrhosis, and prior treatment experience.
