Overview

We wish to acknowledge the support of the Johns Hopkins Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program.

As the older adult population lives longer and becomes increasingly diverse, it is imperative that we offer high quality continuing education in the care and management of geriatric patients. Most physicians have received very little or no formal geriatrics training, despite this growing trend in the number of older adults they care for. This activity is designed to provide practical information to clinicians and healthcare professionals who care for older adults. It will address the specific challenges faced including the COVID-19 pandemic and racial/ethnic inequities and impact on older adults and the health care team. It will improve knowledge about diseases and syndromes common in the elderly and offer practical and effective guides to their management and address cultural competence in providing care.

Objectives
  1. Identify common geriatric syndromes and approaches to and limits of management of specific disease of organ systems that are common in older adults (Dementia, CHF, Diabetes and Polypharmacy).
  2. Recognize the growing diversity in the older population and awareness of health inequities when providing care to meet their individual needs.
  3. Describe current status of the COVID-19 Pandemic and challenges faced by older adults and health care teams.
  4. Describe important research developments that influence the clinical care of geriatric patients.
