Overview

Multiple sclerosis (MS) affects just under 1 million people in the United States, and it is mostly diagnosed in younger adults (less than 50 years of age), and it is the leading cause of physical disability and cognitive decline in this patient population. Although MS is considered to occur on a spectrum and can have variable presentations, an episode of clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) can be the first clue to making a timely diagnosis in some patients. With CIS, patients likely to convert to MS, and proper monitoring and management are crucial to preventing neurological damage and preserving physical and cognitive function for as long as possible. Using a case-based approach, this activity will show how the care of patients with MS can be optimized to improve outcomes through early diagnosis and intervention in high-risk CIS patients. It will also provide an overview of currently approved disease-modifying therapies (DMTs), outlining evidence-based data that can help guide treatment decision-making.
