Overview
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States, with an estimated 220,000 new diagnoses of lung cancer in 2018 resulting in more than 150,000 deaths, making lung cancer more deadly than breast, prostate and colon cancer combined. Although the number of new cases of lung cancer is declining, the death rate from lung cancer continues to be staggering. Among new diagnoses in the United States, approximately 40% occur in current smokers, 40% in former smokers, and 20% in patients who have never smoked. Difficulties faced in the treatment of lung cancer are compounded by the frequent late stage of diagnosis in combination with associated environmental and genetic factors.

Recent advances in lung cancer research have provided improved understanding and stratification of different types of non-small-cell lung cancer. This has led to a further research which has and continues to identify targetable molecular and genetic mutations as well as biomarkers of immunotherapeutics. As our knowledge improves, the previous practice to treat all non-small-cell lung cancer with cytotoxic chemotherapeutic agents has undergone immense change. We are now entering an era of personalized therapy in which lung cancer is characterized by specific potentially targetable genetic alterations and biomarkers to immunotherapy. Recognizing these targets, developing and testing targeted chemotherapeutics, evaluating mechanisms of tumor resistance and suitability for immunotherapy require a multi-disciplinary approach and collaborative efforts.

As our experience with and use of immunotherapeutics in lung cancer grows so to does the recognition of the differing types of immunotherapy related adverse events (irAE). These irAEs are of great consequence in that they can be associated with significant morbidity and even mortality but often force the physician to hold highly effect therapy. In addition to Day One of the conference which will highlight the recent advances in lung cancer screening, diagnostics and treatment, Day Two will be presented as a master class focusing on organ specific immunotherapy related adverse events and their management in order to aid the practicing clinician in their management of immunotherapy and irAE.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This activity is intended for physicians with specialties in pulmonary and critical care, internal medicine, family medicine, thoracic surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, respiratory therapists, physician trainees, students, residents, and fellows.

  2. Identify and describe updates and advances in chemotherapy treatment for patients with advanced lung cancer.
  3. Discuss new advances in immunotherapy in the treatment of lung cancer.
  4. Identify and describe organ specific immunotherapy related adverse events as well as their management.
  5. Evaluate patients with malignant airway obstruction, mediastinal/hilar lymph adenopathy and peripheral lung lesions.
  6. Evaluate patients with newly diagnosed lung nodules.
  7. Discuss novel non-invasive detection of lung cancer.
  8. Discuss the side effects associated with new chemotherapeutic agents and their management.
