Target Audience
Specialties - Gastroenterology, General Surgery

Overview
We continue to see great advances in the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal and liver disease. Therapy continues to evolve in multiple directions. There are constantly new medications being approved for chronic hepatitis C and inflammatory bowel disease in addition to new consensus and position statements on these topics. The line is also blurring between the traditional realms of endoscopy and surgery. We are now seeing novel endoscopic approaches to the complications of Barrett’s esophagus as well as endoscopic based bariatric surgery. To maintain their practices, gastroenterologists and surgeons need to stay up to date on a wide range of topics including diagnosis of autoimmune pancreatitis, understanding immunosuppression management in the post-liver transplant patient, delineating the role for surgical versus endoscopic approaches to gastric cancer, and treating the pregnant patient with elevated liver function tests, yet formal education in these areas is limited. It is difficult for practicing physicians and surgeons to stay abreast of these new advances.
