Overview
The purpose of the Longitudinal Program in Curriculum Development is to address the knowledge and skills of the six-step curriculum development process, including problem identification, needs assessment, the formulation of general goals and specific measurable objectives, the choice of educational methods appropriate to the educational objectives, program implementation and administration, learner and program evaluation, and continuous program improvement. This is done in the context of developing and piloting a curriculum under the mentorship of program facilitators, usually as part of a small team of participants. Additional content areas covered during the course will include: 1) working in groups; 2) searching the medical literature for educational articles; 3) obtaining IRB approval; 4) designing surveys; 5) utilizing the JHUSOM Simulation Center; 6) using information technology to support educators; 7) finding and applying for funding; 8) writing for publication and presenting one’s work; and 9) applying the six-step approach to online-learning.

Objectives
  1. Describe the knowledge and apply the skills necessary to effectively design, implement, and evaluate a curriculum.
  2. Design, pilot, and formulate plans for the implementation of a curriculum in medical education relevant to the needs of their learners and institution as well as to their own professional career(s).
  3. Explain their work to the academic community.
