Pediaric echocardiography is an evolving field requiring continuing education for sonographers and physicians alike so they may continue to provide the latest standard of care to patients. This weekly, regularly scheduled series focuses on improving quality of care by reviewing diagnostic errors and cost effectiveness within the echo lab. Continuous case review has led to strategies implemented to minimize such errors. Further, these case discussions have led to evidence of improvement, such as, showing postoperative transesophageal echo is directly associated with improved postoperative patient outcomes. This series further allows an open forum for students, residents, and clinical fellows to share their experience and further their education.

6/8/2018 1:00:00 PM Second Annual Lyme Disease Topics at Johns Hopkins 6/8/2018 1:00:00 PM 6/8/2018 5:30:00 PM 15 False MM/DD/YYYY Second Annual Lyme Disease Topics at Johns Hopkins

Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne infection in North America with over 300,000 new cases of Lyme disease diagnosed every year. When diagnosed in its earliest phase the outcome of infection is generally favorable. Timely diagnosis of Lyme disease depends on the accurate identification of the early erythema migrans skin lesion and on the proper use of the currently available serologic tests for Lyme disease. Delayed or misdiagnosis of Lyme disease can occur when erythema migrans rash is not accurately identified or not present, or when the incorrect interpretation of Lyme disease serology occurs. Expert panels in the United States and Canada have identified the need for better understanding of how to use the currently available diagnostic tests for Lyme disease.

Description

The activity is held approximately monthly at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland, in a multimedia classroom constructed specifically for the learner’s needs. This is a workstation-based training activity, designed to meet American College of Cardiology/ American Heart Association requirements. Each participant has their own workstation to use throughout the activity and receives personal attention and instruction by the activity faculty. A workstation which projects to the front of the room is used by instructors to demonstrate various aspects of CT interpretation. After receiving training on the use of the workstation, a library of cases selected to demonstrate the variety of pathology which can be evaluated by CT (coronary disease, bypass grafts, stents, anomalies, cardiomyopathies, EP, pericardial disease, cardiac tumors) is reviewed. A minimum of 100 cases are reviewed during the five days of the activity.

Twenty-four hours of didactic instruction are included through lectures and reading materials, which will cover topics of patient selection, preparation, radiation, contrast, cardiac anatomy, assessment of cardiac function, cardiac pathology, etc. Members of the Johns Hopkins faculty and guest faculty will present these topics. Participants will take a quiz to confirm understanding of these materials.

The requirement for observation of the acquisition of 50 studies is satisfied by utilizing a combination of onsite observation of approximately 25 studies supplemented by interactive observation of approximately 25 studies performed offsite and viewed by interactive video link. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions during acquisition of the studies (i.e., patient selection, use of beta blockers) and to observe the steps in obtaining the scan by direct observation of the scanner console. The scans that were acquired during the week of the activity are anonymized and participants will interpret these studies on their own time following the five days of onsite training. After faculty review of the participants’ interpretation of these 50 studies and the other elements of the activity, a certificate documenting completion of these studies will be issued.

DESCRIPTION
The use of ultrasound imaging techniques in anesthesia is rapidly becoming an area of intense interest to those involved in the field of perioperative care. Ultrasound imaging techniques will increase the provider confidence and lead to more reliable peripheral nerve blocks. There is increasing evidence that ultrasound guidance is increasing block success rate over nerve stimulations techniques. Further, the block quality resulting from ultrasound guidance has led to a marked decrease in both intra-operative and post-operative opioid usage.

PNB administration is relatively new, the majority of currently practicing anesthesia providers are not trained in its use. With the increased use and availability of ultrasound machines, many more regional anesthesia techniques are utilized and newer techniques are being incorporated. At most institutions, nerve block training is taught via lectures and live scans on a standardized patient, however, the use of needles for a nerve block is not taught We often see a learning gap of using needle and probe. In this workshop, we are not only focused on illustrating lectures and live scans on patients, we also focus on using phantoms of each block so participants can practice blocks in real time.
