Dr. Paul Mullan is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Eastern Virginia Medical School and works as an attending in the Division of Emergency Medicine at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters where is the the Director of Quality Improvement and Research.  Paul completed his undergraduate degree at Columbia, his medical degree at Cornell, and his pediatric residency at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. After working for two years as a pediatric attending in Botswana with the AIDS Corp, he completed a pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at Texas Children’s Hospital and a Master of Public Health degree at the University of Texas. He then worked as an attending at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston and Children's National in his hometown of Washington, D.C.. Paul teams up with colleagues locally and around the world to use clinical event debriefings and other interventions to improve the quality and experience of providing healthcare. He is a huge fan of Deming’s System of Profound Knowledge to create lasting change and is appreciates the beauty of well-designed statistical process control charts. Whether on their local beach or in their backyard with their four pandemic-era chickens, Paul and his wife Lindsay can often be found co-debriefing one of their three young children on their latest triumph or tragedy of the day.
