Clinical Program Building / Leadership

2006–2015              Co-Director, Fetal Cardiology Program, Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital and University of Texas

Medical School. I evaluated and treated fetal patients with congenital heart defects, cardiovascular diseases and rhythm abnormalities. While I served as the co-director, we started the fetal cardiology program whereby we focused on quality measures and increasing the patient volume. We obtained the prestigious ICAEL certification for the fetal program.  We also started a fourth year imaging fellowship and trained the next generation of pediatric cardiology fellows in fetal cardiovascular medicine.  We worked closely with the Maternal Fetal Medicine division and I wrote several papers with the team members.  We also trained the Maternal Fetal Medicine fellows during their rotations in our program.

2006–2015              Clinical Director, Diagnostic Cardiovascular Sonography Program, Pediatric Echocardiography, Alvin

Community College, Alvin, Texas.  The leadership at the community college invited me to serve as

clinical director in their teaching program.  I worked after hours with the sonographers in developing an

accredited 2-year associate’s degree program to train pediatric cardiac sonographers.  This program is the

first of its kind in the United States.

2011–2015              Director of Advanced Cardiac Imaging, University of Texas Medical School, Houston.  I was appointed

to this position by the late Dr. JT Bricker, a world renowned pediatric cardiologist and division chief.  I

obtained advanced training and certifications in cardiac MRI and cardiac CT imaging and subsequent

credentialing at the Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.  I worked closely with the radiology staff

and they gave me an associate professor’s position in the department of Diagnostic & Interventional

Radiology at the University.  I performed and interpreted cardiovascular CT and MRI in children and

trained the radiology residents and fellows in the same.

Clinical Demonstration Activities to external audience, on or off campus

2006–2015              Provided lectures and training in scanning techniques every 2 months at the Heart and Vascular Institute,

for the sonographers in the Houston and surrounding areas.

2014                            Program director for the 2-day Echocardiography Symposium, at the Alvin Community College, Alvin, Texas, where we trained regional and national sonographers in hands-on scanning in transthoracic and fetal echocardiography

Development of nationally/internationally recognized clinical standard of care

2006                            Described guidelines for childhood cardiotoxicity from cancer-related therapy, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy in the textbook “Cancer and the Heart”.

2007                            Described and defined the processes involved in correctly obtaining Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring in children in the textbook “Blood Pressure Monitoring in Cardiovascular Medicine and Therapeutics”.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

Educational Focus

Based on my interest and caliber in teaching I was appointed an Instructor at the Michigan State University during my second year of pediatric residency training.  Since then my academic focus has been in training the next generation of physicians in pediatric cardiovascular diseases.  The residents and fellows have consistently given me high scores on faculty evaluations over the years.  I serve as a member in the Heart Institute Education Council at the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Heart Institute. I also serve as member in the Physician Engagement Council in the education panel. I was also awarded the “Heart Institute Educator of the Year” at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. I also serve as the Associate Director of the ACGME approved Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship program.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

Research Focus

As a physician scientist, for the past several years I have focused on deep phenotyping families with children with essential hypertension and currently working on defining novel gene variants from these enriched pedigrees. My focused research on pediatric cardiovascular diseases has led to reporting of novel phenotypes in childhood hypertension. My research over the past years has led to detection of hypertension-related cardiomyopathy, aortopathy and vasculopathy in childhood-onset essential hypertension. I have chaired several scientific sessions including at Society for Pediatric Research in 2013 and 2015. .  I also represent JHACH at the NIH funded Pediatric Heart Network steering committee meetings annually. I am currently a member in the Heart Institute Research Council at the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Heart Institute. I also serve as the associate director for pediatric cardiology ACGME fellowship program and director for cardiovascular research here at JHACH where my focus is to mentor pediatric trainees in cardiovascular research. I also serve in the Research and Awards Committee for North American Society for Cardiovascular Imaging.
