Sharon E. Albers, M.D., FAAD
Biosketch
Sharon Albers is Professor of Dermatology and Pediatrics and Director of Pediatric Dermatology at University of South Florida (USF) Morsani College of Medicine. Her roles in the department include Associate Program Director, Dermatology Interest Group Faculty Advisor, Student Clerkship Director and Vice Chair of Education, Mentorship and Alumni Engagement. At the Morsani College of Medicine she teaches the dermatology Cutaneous Oncology Course and Dermatology Fundamentals in the Doctoring ll Course. She joined the faculty in January 2022.
Prior to joining USF in 2022, she was an Associate Professor of Dermatology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. There she served as the Electronic Health Record Lead, Department of Dermatology Diversity Officer, Wellness Champion, Department of Pediatrics Resident Clinical Instructor and Faculty Advisor for The Shade-Tree Clinic Dermatology, a medical student run free clinic. She was also adjunct faculty at Meharry Medical College, an Historically Black College and University (HBCU), and led the Vanderbilt-Meharry Medical College Dermatology Interest Group. Her time at Meharry and Vanderbilt are notable for establishing tele-dermatology clinics at both institutions. These initiatives were directed toward underserved populations and included both synchronous and asynchronous technology.
Additionally, she served on the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine admissions committee, Department of Dermatology resident selection committee, and was a member of the Vanderbilt vascular anomalies multidisciplinary clinic. She was coordinator for the annual free skin cancer screening. Nationally, she is a member of the EPIC Dermatology Steering Board, an elected position, Pediatric Dermatology Society (PDS) Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee and the PDS Teledermatology Committee. She is an American Academy of Dermatology Diversity mentor. In 2019 she was awarded, via resident vote, the Lloyd E. King, Jr. Excellence in Teaching Award as Faculty Educator of the Year. She was nominated for the John L. Tarpley Award for Commitment to the Care of Underserved Communities (2020). Also, in 2020, she was recognized for her teaching with selection into the Vanderbilt Academy of Excellence in Education.
Prior to joining Vanderbilt in 2017, Dr. Albers spent 15 years on faculty at Meharry Medical College where she ran the Dermatology Division and directed the Skin of Color Clinic. For the first 5 years of her Meharry appointment, she also was the solo Staff Dermatologist the Nashville Pediatric Specialists Clinic at Centennial Pediatrics, which at the time was the largest pediatric clinic in the greater Nashville area. Before coming to Nashville, Sharon had her first faculty appointment after fellowship at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.
Dr. Albers has focused her career solely on pediatric dermatology since the completion of her Pediatric Dermatology Fellowship in 1998. Her areas of clinical focus include pigmented lesions, eczema, vascular anomalies and increasing diversity in dermatology. She has given more than 125 presentations, authored 30 publications and one book chapter. She has mentored more than 100 medical students. She has been an invited reviewer for the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
She completed her BS, summa cum laude, at the Florida State University followed by medical school at the University of South Florida. On completion of medical school, she was awarded the prize for best student performance in dermatology. She completed her internship at Duke University Medical Center and returned to the University of South Florida for her dermatology training. Her first job after residency was the private practice of dermatology in Raleigh, NC, and she then completed fellowships in pigmented lesions and pediatric dermatology at the University of Toronto. Sharon is married and has 2 grown children. In her time away from work, she enjoys yoga, swimming, knitting, and reading.
